History of Kenpo
Chinese Kenpo, often referred to as Kenpo or Kempo, has a rich history shaped by various influences, particularly through the contributions of key figures and clans. Here’s an overview of its evolution:
### Origins
Chinese Kenpo has roots in ancient Chinese martial arts, with its techniques and philosophies evolving over centuries. The term "Kenpo" itself means "law of the fist" in Japanese, and it generally refers to a system of martial arts that emphasizes striking and self-defense techniques.
### Yoshida Clan
The Yoshida clan, particularly Yoshida Shihan, played a significant role in the spread of martial arts from Japan to the West. Although primarily associated with Japanese karate, their influence helped shape various Kenpo systems, including the adaptations that would come to be practiced in the United States.
### James Mitose
James Mitose (1916-1987) was a significant figure in American Kenpo. He brought a version of Kenpo from Hawaii to the mainland United States. Mitose trained in traditional martial arts in Japan and later developed his own system, known as "Kempo," which integrated elements of various styles. He is credited with teaching the art to many students, including those who would later become influential in their own right.
### William Chow
William Chow (1914-1987) was another pivotal figure in the development of Kenpo in the United States. He was a student of Mitose and went on to create his own system known as "Chow's Kenpo," which emphasized practical self-defense techniques. Chow's teachings helped popularize Kenpo in Hawaii and influenced many martial artists who came after him.
### Ed Parker
Ed Parker (1931-1990) is often regarded as the "father of American Kenpo." He trained under William Chow and further developed the system, adapting it to suit American students and emphasizing practicality in self-defense situations. Parker opened the first Kenpo school in the United States, where he created a structured curriculum that focused on techniques, forms, and sparring. He also played a crucial role in popularizing Kenpo through exhibitions and competitions, as well as through his books and instructional videos.
### Al Tracy
Al Tracy, a student of Ed Parker, became a prominent figure in the Kenpo community. He helped to spread Parker’s teachings and further refine the Kenpo system. Tracy, along with his brother, founded the Tracy’s Kenpo Karate system, which focused on a comprehensive approach to martial arts training. He contributed to the growth of Kenpo by establishing schools and training numerous students across the United States.
### Conclusion
The history of Chinese Kenpo is marked by the contributions of various martial artists who adapted and evolved the traditional techniques to fit the needs of their students. The interplay between these influential figures has led to a diverse range of Kenpo styles practiced today, each with its unique characteristics while maintaining the core principles of self-defense and martial arts philosophy.

Martial Artists that Inspired Me
I have been training since I was 8 and am now in my 30s. I've had a lot of inspiration. My first instructor Sensei Wilson and my Second instructor Sensei Carmack, were instrumental in my training and character development.
I was also heavily influenced by Jet Li(my favorite) Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Jeff Speakman, Gordon Liu, Michael Jai White, Jean Claude Van Damme(Bloodsport was one of the first Martial Arts Movies I watched, and all the original Ninja Turtle Movies (especially the first in 90s).
As you go along you'll encounter people and take pieces of what they do or say and make them part of you. Styles are meant to evolve and adapt and your way will be unique to you.
